One Rep Max (1RM)
One rep max is the maximum weight you can lift for a single repetition with proper form. It's the gold standard for measuring strength and programming training intensity. The Epley formula (1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30)) estimates your max from submaximal lifts. Knowing your 1RM allows you to train at specific percentages—85-100% for strength, 65-85% for hypertrophy, and 50-65% for endurance. Regular 1RM testing tracks progress and identifies plateaus.

BMI is a screening tool that estimates body fat based on height and weight. Calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared, BMI categorizes adults as underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25-29.9), or obese (30+). Daily protein needs depend on body weight, activity level, and fitness goals. The RDA of 0.8g/kg is minimum for sedentary adults. Strength athletes benefit from 1.6-2.2g/kg to support muscle protein synthesis and recovery. Protein timing matters less than total daily intake, but distributing 20-40g across meals optimizes muscle building. A caloric deficit occurs when you consume fewer calories than your body burns, forcing it to use stored energy (fat) for fuel. Calculate deficit by subtracting target intake from TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). A 500-calorie daily deficit yields approximately 1 lb weekly weight loss. Aggressive deficits (>1000 calories) risk muscle loss and metabolic adaptation. Combining moderate deficit with strength training and adequate protein preserves muscle while losing fat.
